Terrorism for White Supremacy: Comparative Research Perspectives

Right-wing extremist terrorism has been rising around the world throughout the last decade. The fatal attacks of Utøya, Christchurch, and Halle, among many others, are the epitomes of the dynamics of racist radicalization and violence. The scenario of international RWE terrorism has undergone a pivotal change due to the increased usage of social media as means of spreading hate, conspiracy ideology, digital communication, and recruitment strategies for violent combat. Some of the perpetrators have embraced the role-model of the single-shooter who broadcasts their killing spree in order to be glorified by a fringe online community. Moreover, new groups and networks such as The Base or Atomwaffen Division have emerged as part of the Neo-Nazi online-offline scene and prepare for “Day X” and “race war”. Thus, the threat to minority groups, democratic politicians, and society as a whole have increased substantially. This panel discusses the continuities and innovations of contemporary RWE terrorism from a comparative perspective.
